Washiki Life Sutairu
Our club takes on the Washiki Life Sutairu (Style), planting the seeds of Japanese lifestyle wiithin the heart of local Australian life.
Eleven years ago... the Monash Japanese Club was born encouraging Australians with an active interest in Japan and the Japanese language to explore and celebrate the differences between our cultures. Today, with the same ideal, we continue our journey.
The Monash Japanese Club invites you to relax, sit back and enjoy the university experience with us. Soon enough you will realise that university is not solely based on obtaining high grades but more about learning who you are as an individual and making great friends.
Who are we?
Much of Western culture has become lost in the ways of business and industrialization causing many individuals to feel hollow and disconnected. Many search to rediscover themselves and reconnect with the world around them. Partly due to this disconnection, today's youths display a strong interest in Japanese culture. In Japanese culture it is important to remember that you are one amongst many and most importantly, part of a group. Our club tries to emplify that by creating a friendly atmosphere where students can connect with each other, have fun and experience everyday Japanese culture.
Participation
You dont have to be Japanese or be fluent in Japanese to join in the fun. For that matter, you basically need to bring yourself along to join in our many club activities.
The Committee
The Monash Japanese Club commitee is a group of devoted Monash students sharing the common interest of making this club and their Uni Experience as fun and memorable as it can be. Our backgrounds are as colourful as our characters and zest for all things Washiki!
Many of us have been to Japan and lived there or traveled as exchange students. If anything, the one way to sum up our ethic is:
"We just want to have fun and whoever wants to be a part of it is welcome along for the ride". |
KATJA
Hey! I'm Katja, I'm 21 and I'm in the middle of a Psychology degree at the moment. I love anime, chai, shiny things and the Mighty Boosh. My love affair with the Japanese Club began in 2006, and I've since become a karaoke maverick and master of the Japanese drinking game J
This is my first year as president, and I'm really excited to be running such a cool and crazy club with a committee who share a passion for crazy Japanese-style fun.
Hope to see you around some time!

KRYSTLE
Hi! I decided that final year wasn't going to stop me from playing flute again in the Miso Super Band and becoming the new Intoxicated President Carry-Outerer, so here I am!
I'm currently in my fifth year of Arts / Chemical Engineering, having already completed a major in Japanese and a minor in French for Arts. Despite learning nihongo since I was in primary school, I'm not quite pera pera yet!
Joining MJC is an ideal way to make new friends, practice Japanese and have a good time. I joined 9 clubs (just a couple too many) in first year, and MJC is one of clubs I've stuck with! Even if you can't make it to every single activity, come along to one of our main events and I'm sure you'll have fun!

LOLA
Hi, I'm Lola! I'm currently doing an Honours degree of the Bachelor of Arts, and since I won't be having as many classes as the previous years, I thought it would be a great time to get more involved with the Japanese Club by becoming a member of the committee.
The Japanese Club is the perfect place to meet lots of people who are interested in anything to do with Japan, such as its culture, language or even just its food, and of course to make new friends! I'm sure that everyone who joins, or those who just want to drop in to the club events (and there will be a lot of them) will have a great time.

ANDREW
Hey! My name's Andrew, I'm 23?and im studying arts and engineering. Besides finishing a Japanese language major as part of my arts degree, I've also spent a year at Saitama University as an exchange student where i learnt the meaning of nomihoudai, and three months in Hokkaido working at a ski resort hotel where i learnt the meaning of powder. (I also?learned a bit about Japan too) So being part of the MJC keeps me in touch with the Japanese part of my life, and hopefully it will do the same for you guys too. So come down to our events, meet new people, eat our complimentary food, and have an awesome time!

ANDREW
Hi everyone!
I'm a new committee member this year, taking on the role as one of the events co-ordinators.
I've always enjoyed going to the Japanese club previously, so I'm looking forward to helping make this year fun and interesting for everyone.
Previously I've studied Japanese at a beginner level at Uni, but I still have a long way to go.
I look forward to the day I can go to Japan and really improve my Japanese, as well discovering many different aspects about the country.

SCOTT
I'm kind of simple and ordinary but I guess in some ways I'm different and unique... and so far I'm loving life the way it is. I can happily say I am smart enough to get into university. I study at Monash University doing arts. No I can't paint... instead I do International studies, French, Japanese and Japanese studies. My friends say I am the worst person to study with... I'm always talking, get distracted by anything shiny and look over the couch to see who comes in the room. If I disappear for a year it means I been accepted for exchange to Nagoya in Japan. *fingers crossed*. Suprisingly I have three families my real family, my work family and my camp family ( i guess i should add a fourth now... the monash japanese club?? =S ). I heard that toast is said to be the greatest invention since bread but I would say it was garlic bread =D. I may seem grown up and mature at times but im really a child at heart; I love video games, watch kids shows and love candy.

FIONA
Whotto!
Minna genki kai!?! I'm Fiona, 1st year student at Clayton Monash. Like most Arts students, I have no idea what I want to do after uni (perhaps I'll just hide out in the Menzies building until they drag me from the premises), but for the moment I'm quite content studying my assorted artsy-subjects, along with Japanese Language and Japanese Culture Studies. I have been to Japan only in spirit, but with any luck I'll get accepted for exchange at the end of the year. I listen to an ear-bleeding amount of Japanese music - I have a secret fetish for the shiny shiny costumes of Johnny's singers, and wish I was half as pretty as some of those visual kei guys. Japanese television dramas are not lost on me either. ^_^
Come along to Japan club, for frivolity and fun with a Nippon edge. We promise pokky.

PAUL
Konnichiwa~ everyone, my name is Paul! I am currently still a first year studying science/arts, and majoring in Japanese. For whatever the reason ( maybe I was Japanese in another life time?), I am just utterly in love with Japanese culture/language, and also Japan, which I blame mostly on my High school Japanese teacher.
Ever since my time in Japan after high school, I have been itching to see more Japanese culture, so when I found out the Japanese club existed I signed up straight away, and ever since then, I have had non-stop fun with all of these great people! I love this club!!

TIM
Hey I'm Tim and I'm the Japanese Club Newletter Editor. My job is to send out emails to club members to inform them of activities and events. This is my second in the committee and I'm loving it. I'm also in my final year of a bachelor mechanical engineering (about time too) which hasn't got much to do with Japan unfortunately but i hope to use my degree to get a job there eventually.
I've always loved anime and Japanese culture though it is only recently that i managed to visit Japan. I absolutely loved it and can't wait to go again.

STUART
Hey guys! Well, I joined the Monash Japanese Club in my first year (2007) and will be taking care of the I.T side of things in the second semester of this year! From the events that I had managed to go to, I can say that this club is an awesome way to have a great time whilst meeting new people and sharing the interest of the Japanese culture!! I am in my 2nd year of chemical engineering as a double with science but this club has helped me to fuel my interests in all things Japanese seeing as I am overloaded with all things chemistry and mathematics (eww yuck! :-p). Give our club a try and you'll be sure to enjoy yourself at our many events and get togethers!!
