Washiki Life Sutairu

Our club takes on the Washiki Life Sutairu (Style), planting the seeds of Japanese lifestyle wiithin the heart of local Australian life.

Eleven years ago... the Monash Japanese Club was born encouraging Australians with an active interest in Japan and the Japanese language to explore and celebrate the differences between our cultures. Today, with the same ideal, we continue our journey.

The Monash Japanese Club invites you to relax, sit back and enjoy the university experience with us. Soon enough you will realise that university is not solely based on obtaining high grades but more about learning who you are as an individual and making great friends.

Who are we?

Much of Western culture has become lost in the ways of business and industrialization causing many individuals to feel hollow and disconnected. Many search to rediscover themselves and reconnect with the world around them. Partly due to this disconnection, today's youths display a strong interest in Japanese culture. In Japanese culture it is important to remember that you are one amongst many and most importantly, part of a group. Our club tries to emplify that by creating a friendly atmosphere where students can connect with each other, have fun and experience everyday Japanese culture.

Participation

You dont have to be Japanese or be fluent in Japanese to join in the fun. For that matter, you basically need to bring yourself along to join in our many club activities.

The Committee

The Monash Japanese Club commitee is a group of devoted Monash students sharing the common interest of making this club and their Uni Experience as fun and memorable as it can be. Our backgrounds are as colourful as our characters and zest for all things Washiki!

Many of us have been to Japan and lived there or traveled as exchange students. If anything, the one way to sum up our ethic is:

"We just want to have fun and whoever wants to be a part of it is welcome along for the ride".

SAORI

Hey, everyone. I am Saori. If you want to pronounce my name correctly, come and join this club. I am kinda fed up with people calling me“sorry". Just joking. Anyway, I just got back from South Africa and now I took over the position from Krystle. This position is going to be challenging for me but I will do my best!!! I am studying BA, majoring in International Studies and Geography. I personally thought Japanese club was for Japanese in Monash University before becoming a member of this club but I reckon this club is a great opportunity to meet people from different background and share common interests. This club is not a Japanese ghetto! There are so many unique people in this club so come and join us and have fun with us!!!

LOLA

Hi, I'm Lola! Since I won't be having as many classes as the previous years, I thought it would be a great time to get more involved with the Japanese Club by becoming a member of the committee.

The Japanese Club is the perfect place to meet lots of people who are interested in anything to do with Japan, such as its culture, language or even just its food, and of course to make new friends! I'm sure that everyone who joins, or those who just want to drop in to the club events (and there will be a lot of them) will have a great time.

SHIMPEI

Hi! I'm Shimpei, currently studying 2nd year Civil Engineering. I have attended Japanese Club gatherings since last year as a general member and realized this club is the best place to meet new people in Uni especially for 1st year students. And this year, I decided to be in the committee not only to assist students who want to meet new people, but also to understand Japanese culture, language or just to chill out once in a week.
Many people have asked whether we have to be Japanese to join this club. The answer is "NO!” Anyone from any year or even outside of Monash University is welcomed to join this club. If you want to relax, relieve stress, meet new people and enjoy, this club is the best choice for you.
Hope to see you all in Monash Japanese Club.
Omachishitemasu.

MANDY

Irasshaimase!
I'm Mandy who cannot write an introduction to save her life.
I'm a first year student at Monash University entering second year in 2009, though technically I should be a third year if it wasn't for attending RMIT University...
I'm not old! I'm 19! (=^-^=)
Well I'm taking Arts/Science and studying things like Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Immunology and Human Pathology. They're different aren't they? But they all have one thing in common, I ain't getting anywhere with them!
Another thing to know about me is that I love my Visual kei j-rock, be it major or indies to the extent that I secretly wish I could marry one of them.
Anyway, bring some friends and come along and visit the Japanese Club sometime!

FIONA

Whotto!
Minna genki kai!?! I'm Fiona, 2nd year student at Clayton Monash. Like most Arts students, I have no idea what I want to do after uni (perhaps I'll just hide out in the Menzies building until they drag me from the premises), but for the moment I'm quite content studying my assorted artsy-subjects, along with Japanese Language and Japanese Culture Studies. I have been to Japan only in spirit, but with any luck I'll get accepted for exchange at the end of the year. I listen to an ear-bleeding amount of Japanese music - I have a secret fetish for the shiny shiny costumes of Johnny's singers, and wish I was half as pretty as some of those visual kei guys. Japanese television dramas are not lost on me either. ^_^
Come along to Japan club, for frivolity and fun with a Nippon edge. We promise pokky.

ERI

Publisher is the post to make posters and tickets for the club.
I like drawing and designing something, so I enjoyed making posters and tickets for the cocktail night in the second semester.

In the first semester, the publisher need to make a new poster and member cards for the club itself and another poster and tickets for the dinner night.
So basically the first semester is busier.

The job of the publisher is fun for people who love making something!
What's more, it is up to you whether you draw picture by yourself or use some pictures you find.
So those who can't draw but like designing are also well come for this job!

STUART

Hey guys! Well, I joined the Monash Japanese Club in my first year (2007) and will be taking care of the I.T side of things this year! From the events that I have managed to go to, I can say that this club is an awesome way to have a great time whilst meeting new people and sharing interest in the Japanese culture!! I am in my 3rd year of chemical engineering as a double degree with science but this club has helped me to fuel my interests in all things Japanese seeing as I am overloaded with all things chem and eng (eww yuck! :-p). Give our club a try and you'll be sure to enjoy yourself at our many events and get togethers!!
